Dear DKE Brothers,
The house will be hosting a gameday luncheon for alumni and families on October 31st in advance of the USC home game. Kickoff for the game as of this writing will either be 12pm or 12:30 so we will have everything set up a couple hours prior. Food and beverage will be provided and we encourage all who can to attend. Coincidentally, the day will also be the 139th anniversary of Theta Zeta’s founding.
In addition to the luncheon, below is a summary of the general happenings around Theta Zeta. In late August, the semester kicked off with rush week and we secured 12 man pledge class for the fall. The pledge class is comprised of nine freshman, two junior transfers and a single year exchange student from the University of Edinburgh. We are confident that these young men will be outstanding leaders for Theta Zeta in the future.
Over the summer we had two members of Theta Zeta attend the DKE Leadership Summit. Alex Lindsay (junior) and James Evans (sophomore) represented our chapter in Austin where they participated in panel discussions and information sessions as well as the Lion’s Trophy Banquet. Theta Zeta earned the honor of 3rd place in community service for the chapter’s fundraisers benefiting The Family Giving Tree in the past year.
While at Cal, all of our brothers participate in philanthropy events in the greek system, but many go beyond that to do more for the community. We have several Dekes volunteering as mentors and tutors at LeConte Elementary in Berkeley. This is a program run by senior David Hoff, and has been run by Dekes for the past several years. LeConte tutoring organizes math tutors for students in 3rd to 5th grade at the elementary school. While the program offers units for tutors, most of our brothers are giving their time as true volunteers.
Several brothers are involved in athletics as well. George Vrame is practicing with the Men’s Rugby team. As a four year athlete for the program, George is one of the team’s leaders and starts as prop for the elevens squad. We also have two brothers on the club golf team. Andrew Smith and Brendan Raney posted solid scores in their recent tournament against Stanford.
We recently hosted our parents for a dinner at the chapter house. Our Vice President, Ben Rajic, organized the event, and the pledges served and provided entertainment, singing Son of Deke for our parents to cap the night off.
The brotherhood is as strong as ever and our actives are enjoying an amazing experience as Theta Zeta Dekes.
In the Bonds,
